A 2000 stair climb is all it requires!

Hiking lofoten's famous Reinebringen trail, norway

If you are fortunate enough to visit the Lofoten Islands during Norway’s summer month’s, hiking up 2000 stairs to the islands’ most iconic view is a must! If the need for headlamps isn’t a deterrence, hiking Reinebringen at sunset has the potential to deliver a colorful show.

The Hike

The stairs were built by Nepalese sherpas beginning in 2016 and were officially completed in 2021. 2,000 stairs and around 1500 feet of elevation gain - this hike is a leg burner!

There are labels painted on the stairs every 100 steps, but we had mixed opinions on whether that was mentally motivating or deflating.

Vast ocean views were present almost the entire way up. I was surprised at how exposed and steep the stairs were - nothing too frightening, but definitely high up there!

Although it’s a popular hike, the rocky area at the summit was spacious. There was plenty of room to get away from people (at least during sunset) and find a nice spot to watch the colors of the sky evolve.

The summit offers a birdseye view of Hamnoy while simultaneously showcasing the various layers of surrounding archipelago. We got lucky with a spectacular sunset that provided ~45 minutes of beautiful colors. The view was unmatched and should be on everyone’s list of must dos when visiting the Lofoten Islands.

Parking

You can park at the center of Reine village, or if you get lucky you can find a spot in the parking lot located immediately as you turn onto Reineveien Road on your way into Reine village. To find the trailhead, you will make a left where Reineveien Road meets E10 and follow the path along the coast for about half a mile until you see the stone stairs marking the beginning of the trail right across the highway.
